Brandenburg Gate
Church Neoclassical triumphal arch and Berlin landmark
Neoclassical Brandenburg Gate anchors Pariser Platz and once marked Berlin’s division; visitors stop for photos, evening illumination and nearby sites like the Reichstag and Unter den Linden.
The Brandenburg Gate is an 18th-century neoclassical triumphal arch in central Berlin, erected between 1788 and 1791 and designed by architect Carl Gotthard Langhans. It is crowned by the Quadriga, a chariot drawn by four horses sculpted by Johann Gottfried Schadow.
The gate stands about 26 metres high and served historically as a city gate at the end of Unter den Linden; in the 20th century it became a potent symbol of Germany’s division and later reunification. The plaza in front of the gate is a major public space used for ceremonies and events.
Construction was commissioned by King Frederick William II of Prussia to mark peace and it survived heavy damage during World War II before being restored. The gate gained renewed international prominence when it became accessible again after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.
Located at Pariser Platz at the western end of Unter den Linden, the Brandenburg Gate sits close to the Reichstag and other central Berlin landmarks in the Mitte district.
- Best time for photos: Photographs are particularly striking at dawn or after dark when the gate and Quadriga are illuminated and traffic is lighter.
How to Get to Brandenburg Gate #
Brandenburg Gate sits in central Berlin at Pariser Platz. Take the U-Bahn U5 to Brandenburger Tor station (exit to Pariser Platz) - the monument is immediately adjacent; several S‑Bahn and bus services also stop within a short walk. From Berlin Hauptbahnhof it’s about 1 km (roughly a 10-15 minute walk) along Ebertstraße; by car you reach it via Straße des 17. Juni/Unter den Linden.
Tips for Visiting Brandenburg Gate #
- Visit at first light or after sunset to avoid tour-bus crowds and to get cleaner photos of the gate illuminated against Pariser Platz; mid‑day is busiest.
- Arrive and depart via the Brandenburger Tor station (U-Bahn U5 / nearby S‑Bahn) and exit onto Pariser Platz for the most direct access and best photo compositions.
- Many visitors only see the front plaza - walk through to the Tiergarten side and along Straße des 17. Juni for quieter views and better context, or prebook a visit to the Reichstag dome for high-level skyline photos.
