Palace Ruined Byzantine seaside palace in historic Constantinople
Byzantine palace on Istanbul’s Sea of Marmara shoreline, now ruins within the historic peninsula. Visitors encounter masonry fragments and combine a visit with nearby Hagia Sophia and Topkapı.
Boukoleon Palace was an imperial Byzantine seaside palace located on the southern shore of the historic peninsula of Constantinople (modern Istanbul). It formed part of the coastal imperial complex and contained reception and residence spaces opening onto the sea.
Remains of the palace include sea-wall foundations and scattered masonry along the Marmara shore that indicate the palace’s former scale and its direct access to the water. The site lies close to other late antique and medieval monuments of the historic city.
The palace has origins in late antiquity and was expanded at different periods during the Byzantine era to serve imperial and ceremonial functions. It suffered damage and decline after the Latin occupation in the early 13th century and fell into disrepair under Ottoman rule.
