Boston Common

Boston Common is a public city park in downtown Boston established in 1634 and recognized as the oldest city park in the United States. It functions as a large, open urban green used for recreation, civic events, and as a historic site.

The park contains lawns, tree-lined paths, monuments, and the Frog Pond which serves as an ice rink in winter and a reflecting/splash pool in summer. The Freedom Trail runs through the Common, linking it to multiple historic sites, and many public gatherings and protests take place on its lawns.

Boston Common began as common grazing land for the early Massachusetts Bay Colony and over the centuries was used for militia training, public executions, and civic functions before becoming a formal public park. Its layout and features evolved through 18th and 19th century improvements.

The Common sits adjacent to the Boston Public Garden and Beacon Hill, within walking distance of downtown Boston landmarks and government buildings; it is easily reached from several MBTA subway stations.
