Bosque de Fray Jorge National Park

Park Coastal forest preserved by fog; UNESCO biosphere reserve

On Chile’s northern coast, Bosque de Fray Jorge preserves a fog-dependent forest isolated within arid scrubland; visitors study unusual flora and walk short park trails.

Main image

Bosque de Fray Jorge National Park is a protected area in Chile’s Coquimbo Region known for its isolated, fog-fed patches of temperate forest within an otherwise semi-arid coastal zone.

Trails and viewpoints allow visitors to see remnants of evergreen forest within dry shrubland and observe plant species more typical of southern Chile, sustained locally by coastal fog. Short walks and lookouts concentrate visitor activity; wildlife sightings and interpretive signage explain the unusual ecology.

The area has been set aside for conservation to protect the rare forest fragments and their associated species; it was recognized for its ecological importance during the 20th century and managed as a national park and biosphere reserve to preserve the fog-dependent habitat.

The park sits on the Pacific coastal plain of northern Chile in Coquimbo Region, roughly along the coastal corridor between the cities of La Serena and Los Vilos, with steep coastal terraces rising from the shore and views toward the ocean.

  • Fog-dependent forest: A coastal fog or mist system helps sustain relict temperate forest patches in an otherwise semi-arid landscape, making the park ecologically distinct in northern Chile.
  • Protected status: Designated as a protected area and recognized for its unique ecology, the park contains small forest fragments that contrast sharply with surrounding dry scrubland.

Tips for Visiting Bosque de Fray Jorge National Park #

  • Go early in the morning to catch the coastal fog (camanchaca) that feeds the forest - it dissipates by midday.
  • Enter through the main visitor area near Ruta D-505; marked trails are the safest-avoid wandering off because the terrain hides gullies.
  • Bring a good camera with a short telephoto: the park is one of the best places in Chile to see coastal birds (perched raptors and endemic passerines).
  • Combine the visit with a stop in Ovalle (about 75 km south) for supplies; there are no services inside the reserve.
