Borsippa
Archaeological Site Ancient Mesopotamian city site with a ruined ziggurat
Borsippa lies near ancient Babylon in central Iraq and preserves the remains of a large Neo-Babylonian ziggurat. Archaeologists and history-minded visitors come to see the ruins and regional archaeological sites.
Borsippa is an ancient Mesopotamian city site in Iraq’s Babil Governorate notable for its large ruined ziggurat traditionally dedicated to the god Nabu. The surviving monumental platform remains a prominent feature on the Euphrates plain and is often referred to locally as Birs Nimrud.
Archaeological evidence shows occupation from the early second millennium BCE through Neo-Babylonian and later periods, with substantial rebuilding under Neo-Babylonian rulers such as Nebuchadnezzar II. The ziggurat and associated temple precinct formed the city’s religious core, while surrounding domestic and administrative structures defined its urban layout.
The site stands on the flat alluvial plain of southern Iraq near the modern village commonly associated with the ruins, and it is one of a cluster of ancient sites in the Babylon region. Access is by road from regional towns and the modern provincial centres.
- Religious dedication: The ziggurat is commonly associated with repairs and rebuilding by Neo-Babylonian kings, including Nebuchadnezzar II, and the site is traditionally linked to the god Nabu.
What to See #
- Ziggurat (Birs Nimrud): A large, stepped mudbrick core of the main ziggurat, popularly called Birs Nimrud, that rises as a ruined, multi-tiered platform reaching roughly 30 metres in places and originally dedicated to the god Nabu.
- Temple precinct and city remains: The surrounding remains of the temple precinct, residential districts and city walls that mark the footprint of the ancient settlement and its ceremonial centre.

Tips for Visiting Borsippa #
- Visit in the cool hours (early morning or late afternoon) and in the cooler months (autumn-spring) to avoid Iraq's intense midday heat and the strongest sun.
- Combine Borsippa with a visit to nearby Babylon-they sit close together-so you can see the ziggurat (Birs Nimrud) in context and avoid repeating a separate trip to the area.
- Hire a local, knowledgeable guide at the site entrance; guides can point out inscriptions, masonry details and historical context that most self-guided visitors miss.
Best Time to Visit Borsippa #
Visit outside the peak summer months-late autumn through spring is most comfortable to see Borsippa.
