The visible mounds, some of substantial size, are the principal feature and are complemented by an archaeological park and interpretive displays. The site is one of the best-known mound cemeteries in Norway and contributes to understanding regional power centres in the Vendel and Viking periods.

Excavations and research over the 19th and 20th centuries revealed grave goods and structural features that tie the site to elite burial practices from roughly the 6th to 10th centuries AD. Findings from the site are exhibited locally to explain the cemetery’s historical significance.
