Borre mound cemetery is a concentration of large burial mounds and related archaeological remains in Vestfold, southern Norway, notable for its association with the Viking Age and earlier Scandinavian elite burial practices. The site forms a prominent park-like landscape of barrows.
The visible mounds, some of substantial size, are the principal feature and are complemented by an archaeological park and interpretive displays. The site is one of the best-known mound cemeteries in Norway and contributes to understanding regional power centres in the Vendel and Viking periods.
Excavations and research over the 19th and 20th centuries revealed grave goods and structural features that tie the site to elite burial practices from roughly the 6th to 10th centuries AD. Findings from the site are exhibited locally to explain the cemetery’s historical significance.
The cemetery is situated on the western shore of the Oslofjord in Vestfold county, near the Borre peninsula and close to the towns of Horten and Tønsberg. It is approximately 90 kilometres by road south-southwest of Oslo and is accessible from regional roads and nearby settlements.
