Bornholm is a Danish island in the Baltic Sea, administratively part of the Capital Region and located to the east of mainland Denmark. The island is known for its rocky cliffs, sandy beaches, forested interior and a distinct local culture and crafts tradition.
Notable features include the cliff-top ruins of Hammershus - a large medieval fortress - and a group of characteristic round churches dating from the 12th and 13th centuries. Bornholm also supports small fishing towns, artists’ communities and cycling routes that take advantage of the compact road network.
During the medieval and early modern periods Bornholm was a strategic maritime outpost and the sites on the island reflect its defensive and religious roles. Today it is a popular domestic holiday destination noted for outdoor recreation and local food products.
The island lies in the Baltic Sea southeast of Zealand and southwest of Sweden, reachable by regular ferries from Danish and Swedish ports.
