Main image

A well-preserved wooden stave church in Lærdal, Vestland county, Norway, built around the late 12th century and now maintained as a historic monument. It is widely regarded as one of the finest surviving examples of medieval Norwegian wooden church architecture.

The exterior shows multiple steeply pitched roofs with dragon-head details and wooden shingles, while the interior preserves medieval timber construction and carved decorations. The church is presented as a museum piece with controlled access to protect its fabric.

Constructed around 1180, the building has survived with relatively little structural alteration compared with many other medieval churches; it has been cared for by preservation organisations since the 19th century. It represents traditional stave-building techniques from the Viking-to-medieval transition period.

Situated beside the E16 road near the village of Borgund in Lærdal municipality, the church is accessible by car and lies inland from the Sognefjord in western Norway.

  • Date and preservation: Dated to around the late 12th century, it is one of the best-preserved Norwegian stave churches and is noted for its multiple tiered roofs and carved wooden ornamentation.

Tips for Visiting Borgund stavkirke #

  • Try to arrive early in the day or late afternoon to avoid coach tours that fill the small site during peak summer; the church's remote setting is quieter outside the main tourist hours.
  • Enter via the visitor facility across the road where the ticketing and explanatory panels are located-many visitors skip the short exterior interpretation and miss woodwork details and rune-style carvings under the eaves.
  • Walk completely around the exterior to study the roof carvings and layered construction; the church's preservation is best appreciated from multiple exterior viewpoints, which many people rush past.
