Constructed around 1180, the building has survived with relatively little structural alteration compared with many other medieval churches; it has been cared for by preservation organisations since the 19th century. It represents traditional stave-building techniques from the Viking-to-medieval transition period.
Situated beside the E16 road near the village of Borgund in Lærdal municipality, the church is accessible by car and lies inland from the Sognefjord in western Norway.
