Borgholm Castle
Ruins Ruined royal castle on Öland island
On Sweden’s Öland, Borgholm Castle is a seasonal ruin with broad ramparts and towers; the site hosts events, and visitors combine the castle with coastal drives and island cycling.
Borgholm Castle is a large castle ruin located in the town of Borgholm on the island of Öland, Sweden. The site has medieval origins and later served as a royal and noble residence before becoming the ruin seen today.
Visitors explore thick masonry walls, a central keep and open courtyards that create a dramatic ruinscape with views across the Kalmar Strait. Seasonal exhibitions interpret the site’s transformation from a medieval fortress to a later palace and its eventual destruction.
The site began as a medieval stronghold and was substantially rebuilt and enlarged over several centuries, including major Baroque-era alterations in the 17th and 18th centuries. The complex was largely gutted by fire in the early 19th century and was not rebuilt as a functioning palace.
The ruin sits in the coastal town of Borgholm on Öland’s west coast, facing the Swedish mainland across the Kalmar Strait; access to the island is normally via the Öland Bridge to Kalmar.
- Access: Öland is connected to the mainland by the Öland Bridge, a fixed link of about 6 kilometres to Kalmar that provides the usual vehicle access for visitors.
- Current condition: The castle was largely destroyed by fire in the early 19th century and has since remained a ruin, with parts accessible to visitors during the tourist season.
What to See #
- Keep and curtain walls: The central ruined keep and curtain walls form the most visible remains and offer panoramic views across the Kalmar Strait toward the mainland.
- Ruin grounds and visitor displays: The larger ruin grounds include remains of royal apartments and palace wings, where seasonal exhibitions and displays interpret the site's history.
How to Get to Borgholm Castle #
Borgholm is reached by road across Öland from the Öland Bridge (connecting to the mainland town of Kalmar). During summer ferries connect Öland with the mainland as well. From Borgholm town center the castle is a short walk; local buses run from Kalmar to Borgholm in peak season.
Tips for Visiting Borgholm Castle #
- Walk the narrow ramparts at dusk when the island light softens the yellow limestone and tour groups thin out.
- Explore the summer palace grounds and look for the engraved weathering on the stone - the castle has been rebuilt multiple times and each layer leaves a trace.
- Check local event listings: Borgholm hosts concerts and a midsummer program that animate the ruins, especially in July and August.
Best Time to Visit Borgholm Castle #
The fortress is best visited in late spring through early autumn when access and events are most reliable.
