Bordeaux, known historically as the ‘Port of the Moon’ for the U-shaped bend of the Garonne River around the city, is an extensive urban ensemble noted for its 18th-century architecture and planned riverfront. The historic centre preserves a continuous urban fabric of classical and neoclassical buildings and public spaces.
The quays, grand squares and avenues reflect Bordeaux’s role as a major Atlantic port and commercial hub, with principal sights including the riverfront façades, the Grand Théâtre and formal public spaces. The cityscape is noted for its uniform stone façades, long sightlines and architectural coherence across the historic district.
Bordeaux’s urban expansion and reworking in the 18th century created much of the ensemble visible today; subsequent restoration and conservation have aimed to preserve the streetscapes, façades and public quays that define the riverside character.
The historic district occupies the central bend of the Garonne River in southwestern France and forms the core of the modern city of Bordeaux, with riverfront promenades providing access and panoramic views.
