The principal attraction is Structure 1, a small rectangular temple whose three interior rooms are covered with polychrome murals depicting rulers, captives, rituals and ceremonies in vivid detail. The murals date to the Late Classic period and are notable for the clarity and narrative quality of their scenes.
The site also includes a plaza and ancillary structures that illustrate Bonampak’s role as a regional ceremonial and administrative center, though the overall complex is compact compared with larger Maya cities.
Bonampak was constructed and occupied during the Classic Maya period; the murals are conventionally dated to around the late 8th century. The site remained little known to the outside world until modern archaeological investigation and public attention in the mid-20th century.
