Bolshoy Lyakhovsky Island
Island Large Arctic island in New Siberian Islands
Part of Russia’s New Siberian Islands, Bolshoy Lyakhovsky draws researchers and adventurous visitors for permafrost landscapes, Pleistocene fossil finds and stark Arctic coastlines.
Bolshoy Lyakhovsky Island is the largest of the Lyakhovsky Islands in the New Siberian archipelago off the north coast of eastern Siberia, in the Sakha Republic. The island is notable for its exposed permafrost cliffs and abundant Pleistocene fossil deposits.
The coastline features high permafrost bluffs where thaw and erosion regularly reveal ice-rich yedoma deposits and fossil bones. The interior is low-lying tundra and coastal plains typical of the high Arctic.
Russian Arctic explorers and traders reached and reported the Lyakhovsky Islands in the late 18th century, and scientific interest in the islands grew in the 19th and 20th centuries because of the fossil record. Ongoing scientific expeditions study permafrost stratigraphy, paleoecology and climate records preserved in the deposits.
The island lies in the Laptev Sea north of mainland Yakutia and is administered as part of the Sakha Republic. There are no permanent settlements and access is limited to summer boat landings or aerial transport when weather and ice conditions allow.
- Fossil exposures: Coastal permafrost cliffs expose Pleistocene yedoma deposits and large numbers of fossil remains, including mammoth material, making it important for paleontological research.
- Access constraints: Access is by sea or air only and is seasonally constrained by Arctic sea ice and weather, so visits require specialist logistics and planning.
