Boerum Hill

Boerum Hill is a residential neighborhood in north-central Brooklyn, New York City, known for its preserved brownstone houses and low-rise urban fabric. It developed as a working and middle-class area in the 19th century and is now largely residential with local retail streets.

The neighborhood offers short walks along tree-lined streets with brownstones, small local restaurants, cafes, and boutique shops concentrated on corridors such as Smith Street and Atlantic Avenue. Public parks and community gardens punctuate the area and provide recreational space within a compact street grid.

Boerum Hill was named for the Boerum family that owned farmland in the area during Brooklyn’s early development. Residential building expanded in the 19th century with rowhouses and townhouses; the neighborhood later experienced preservation and gentrification from the late 20th century onward.

Boerum Hill sits in north-central Brooklyn, bordered by Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, and Downtown Brooklyn, a short subway ride from lower Manhattan.
