Bodiam Castle
Castle 12th-century moated medieval castle in East Sussex
In East Sussex, Bodiam Castle is a 14th‑century moated fortress with intact battlements and a photogenic exterior. Visitors come for medieval architecture, photography and gentle walks around the surrounding estate.
Bodiam Castle is a late 14th-century moated castle near Robertsbridge in East Sussex, England, constructed in 1385. It is noted for its circular corner towers, substantial curtain walls, and a surrounding water-filled moat that preserve the appearance of a fortified manor house.
The castle’s design combines defensive elements with domestic accommodation; surviving features include the gatehouse with twin D-shaped towers, sections of curtain wall, and the hall area within the enclosure. The water-filled moat and well-preserved external profile make it one of the most photographed medieval castles in England.
Bodiam was built by Sir Edward Dalyngrigge in 1385 and later declined; it was repaired and consolidated during the 19th and early 20th centuries and is now in the care of the National Trust, open to the public with visitor facilities.
The castle stands in low-lying agricultural country in East Sussex, close to the village of Bodiam and the town of Robertsbridge, accessible by local roads from southeast England.
- Photographing tip: Best photographic views are from the western bank across the moat, which show the symmetrical curtain walls and tower silhouettes clearly.
What to See #
- Moat: Moat and outer earthworks that encircle the square-plan castle, forming a near-complete water-filled defensive circuit that remains largely intact.
- Gatehouse and towers: The gatehouse and twin D-shaped towers provide access across the causeway and are among the most complete medieval gate structures in England.
- Great hall and curtain wall: The great hall and interior curtain wall survivals showing the layout of a late 14th-century fortified manor house rather than a purely military fortress.
