How to Get to Bodh Gaya
Bodh Gaya is served by Gaya Airport and Gaya Junction railway station; Patna is the closest major airport with more flight options. The short road link from Gaya makes the rail/air combination the common arrival route for pilgrims and visitors.
Gaya Airport (GAY): Gaya Airport is the closest airport serving Bodh Gaya; flights are limited and seasonal. From Gaya Airport taxis or auto-rickshaws take about 20-40 minutes to reach Bodh Gaya (typical fares INR 300-800 depending on vehicle).
Patna (PAT): Jay Prakash Narayan Airport in Patna is the larger nearby airport with more connections. The road transfer from Patna to Bodh Gaya takes about 3-4 hours by car or bus; taxis cost several thousand rupees while buses are cheaper but slower.
Train: Gaya Junction is the main railhead for Bodh Gaya and is well served by trains from Patna, Delhi, Kolkata and other cities. From Gaya Junction it is a short taxi/auto-rickshaw ride (typically 20-40 minutes) to Bodh Gaya.
Bus: State-run and private buses connect Bodh Gaya with Gaya, Patna and other regional centres. Local shared autos and buses handle short hops around the temple area; fares are inexpensive but timings can be irregular.
How to Get Around Bodh Gaya #
Bodh Gaya’s core pilgrimage area is compact and very walkable; most temples and visitor facilities are within a short stroll of the Mahabodhi Temple complex. Auto-rickshaws, cycle-rickshaws and taxis handle short journeys around town; many guests also hire bicycles or scooters. Fares are generally low-expect small cash fares for rickshaw rides-so negotiate prices up front. If you’re visiting other Bihar attractions, a hired car is useful for day trips.
