Museum Museum on Museum Island focusing on sculpture and coins
Bode Museum on Berlin’s Museum Island presents sculpture, Byzantine art and a major numismatic collection inside an early‑20th‑century riverside building.
The Bode Museum is a museum on Berlin’s Museum Island housing large collections of sculpture, Byzantine art and numismatics. The current building opened in 1904 and is set at the northern tip of Museum Island on the Spree River.
Exhibits focus on three distinct areas: sculptural works spanning medieval to later European periods, a collection of Byzantine art, and an extensive numismatic cabinet with historic coins and medals. Galleries are arranged within a historic early 20th-century museum building close to the Berliner Dom and other island museums.
Designed by architect Ernst von Ihne, the museum opened in 1904 as the Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum. It was damaged during World War II and underwent restorations in the late 20th and early 21st centuries while continuing to house the collections associated with Wilhelm von Bode.
