Bodø Domkirke
Church Cathedral serving Bodø, notable modernist architecture
Cathedral in central Bodø serving as the city’s main church; noted for post‑war architecture, regular services and concerts, and for visitors exploring coastal Nordland.
Bodø Domkirke (Bodø Cathedral) is the main cathedral in the town of Bodø in Nordland, northern Norway and serves as the seat of the local Lutheran diocese. The present church was built after the wartime destruction of the town and was consecrated in the 1950s.
The cathedral is a postwar, mid-20th century building used for regular worship, concerts and civic religious functions, and is a focal point of the town centre. Architecturally it reflects postwar reconstruction approaches common to Norwegian towns rebuilt after World War II.
The current cathedral replaced an earlier church destroyed during the Second World War; construction and consecration took place in the 1950s as part of the town’s postwar rebuilding. Since then it has served as the principal parish church and diocesan seat for the area.
The cathedral stands in central Bodø, on the coastal plain of northern Norway near the harbour and municipal centre, within Nordland county and north of the Arctic Circle.
- Seasonal light: Bodø lies north of the Arctic Circle so visits are affected by midnight sun in summer and polar night in winter, which can influence service hours and lighting views of the cathedral.
