Bobastro

Bobastro is the ruined fortified settlement and rock complex in Andalusia associated with the 9th and 10th century rebel leader ʿUmar ibn Hafsun. It occupies a rocky outcrop and includes fortification remains and a notable rock-cut church.

Today visitors can see the remains of defensive walls, ruined buildings and the rock-hewn church carved into the limestone; the visible features are compact and reached by short footpaths. The site is primarily of archaeological and historical interest rather than a developed tourist attraction.

The fortress became a principal refuge and base for ʿUmar ibn Hafsun during his rebellion against the Umayyad Emirate of Córdoba in the late 9th century and into the early 10th century; later it was retaken by forces loyal to the Cordoban rulers in the early 900s. The rock-cut church is usually dated to the period of Christian occupation associated with the rebellion.

Bobastro sits in the rugged hills of Andalusia in the province of Málaga, near the municipality of Ardales and within the limestones of the local mountain landscape.
