Blyde River Canyon

Blyde River Canyon is a large canyon system in Mpumalanga, South Africa, formed by the Blyde River cutting through sedimentary rock and producing steep cliffs and lush, vegetated gorges. It is one of the largest green canyons in the world.

Key highlights include the sculpted cliff group known as the Three Rondavels, the erosional formations at Bourke’s Luck Potholes, and a series of panoramic viewpoints along the Panorama Route that offer broad views of the canyon and river below. Many viewpoints are reachable by short walks from car parks.

The canyon formed through long-term river erosion and weathering of the escarpment; features such as the potholes were carved where tributary streams meet the main river. The area has also been used for limited forestry and tourism development in the surrounding uplands.

Geographically the canyon sits on the Mpumalanga highveld escarpment near the town of Graskop and the historic village of Pilgrim’s Rest, within driving distance of larger centres in the province.

• Best viewpoints and season: Most viewpoint access is along the Panorama Route from the towns of Graskop and Sabie; visibility is often clearest in the dry winter months.
• Ease of access: The canyon is a partly river-cut and partly weathered landscape with multiple easily accessed lookouts within a short driving distance of each other.

What to See #

• Three Rondavels: A cluster of dramatic cliff formations that resemble traditional round huts and are one of the most photographed features of the canyon.
• Bourke's Luck Potholes: A series of cylindrical potholes carved at the confluence of the Treur and Blyde rivers, formed by water erosion and accessible from a riverside viewpoint and walkways.
• Panorama Route viewpoints: Several roadside lookout points along the Panorama Route, including well-known platforms that give panoramic views over the canyon and its river valley.
