Blue Mountains National Park
Park World Heritage park with sandstone escarpments and eucalyptus
Sydney’s sandstone escarpments, eucalyptus moorlands and waterfall gullies draw bushwalkers to lookouts like Echo Point and trails through Jamison Valley. Canyoning and Scenic World rides complement day trips.
Blue Mountains National Park is a large protected area of sandstone plateaus, deep gorges and eucalyptus forest in New South Wales, west of Sydney. It forms part of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area inscribed for its representation of eucalypt diversity.
Dramatic sandstone cliffs, perched lookouts and broad valleys define the park, with popular viewpoints such as Echo Point and the Three Sisters near Katoomba offering panoramic views over the Jamison Valley. A network of walking tracks ranges from short scenic circuits to multi-day canyon routes, and waterfalls such as Wentworth Falls are major attractions.
The park is also valued for its extensive eucalyptus forests and their ecological diversity, which are accessible via scenic drives, walking trails and heritage towns like Katoomba and Blackheath that serve as bases for exploration. Scenic World (near Katoomba) provides visitor facilities and privately operated incline railway, cableway and walkway access into the valley.
The area has been occupied and managed for tens of thousands of years by Aboriginal peoples, including the Gundungurra and Darug, who maintain cultural ties to the landscape. European exploration and crossing of the Blue Mountains in 1813 opened the interior to settlement, and the area was progressively protected through park designations in the 20th century.
The park stretches along the Great Dividing Range west of Sydney, within New South Wales; access points and towns such as Katoomba, Blackheath and Wentworth Falls are the main visitor gateways, roughly 50 to 90 kilometres from central Sydney depending on route.
- Distance from Sydney: The park sits on the western edge of the Sydney metropolitan area, roughly 50 to 90 kilometres from central Sydney depending on the access point, so allow 1.5 to 2 hours by car from the city.
- Practical note: Many popular lookouts and walking tracks are exposed; bring sun protection and water, and check for track closures after heavy rain or fire seasons.
What to See #
- Three Sisters (Echo Point): The **Three Sisters** rock formation at Echo Point, Katoomba is a sandstone trio of summits overlooking the Jamison Valley and is one of the park's most photographed viewpoints.
- Wentworth Falls: Wentworth Falls features multi-tiered waterfalls and well-maintained walking tracks that descend into the valley and link several lookouts and picnic areas.
- Govetts Leap and Grose Valley: Govetts Leap and its lookout provide one of the clearest views into the Grose Valley and access to longer hiking routes into the sandstone gorges.
