Blue Mountains (Jamaica)
Mountains Mountain range famous for coffee and biodiversity
Ridge-line coffee plantations and cloud forest trails draw hikers and birdwatchers to Jamaica’s Blue Mountains. Visitors come for long walks, Blue Mountain coffee tastings, cooler air and views across steep valleys toward the island’s interior.
The Blue Mountains are a mountain range east of Kingston, Jamaica, rising to peaks above 2,000 metres and forming the island’s highest uplands. The range is one of Jamaica’s principal natural regions and a major area for speciality coffee production.
The area offers extensive hiking and birdwatching opportunities, with cloud forest, steep ridges and scattered coffee plantations. Trails range from short walks to multi‑hour routes that move through plantation terraces and into montane forest.
Historically the mountains have supported small-scale agriculture and coffee estates since the 18th and 19th centuries and served as refuge terrain for Maroon communities during the colonial period. Much of the range is included within protected areas that recognise both natural and cultural values.
Geographically the Blue Mountains rise immediately to the east and north of Kingston and extend toward the island’s eastern parishes, forming a prominent upland barrier on Jamaica’s windward side.
- Blue Mountain coffee: Home to Jamaica's internationally traded Blue Mountain coffee, grown on the range's higher, cooler slopes.
- Climate and packing tip: Higher elevations offer cooler temperatures and cloud forest conditions distinct from the coastal lowlands, so bring warm clothing for hikes above 1,000 metres.
