Blaník
Mountain Legendary hill with chapel and sleeping-knights folklore
Wooded hill in Central Bohemia linked to the Knights of Blaník legend; hikers follow trails to a chapel and viewpoints that overlook farmland and mixed forest.
Blaník is a pair of forested hills in the Central Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic, known both for their natural setting and a Czech legend about sleeping knights beneath the hill. The larger summit, Velký Blaník, reaches about 638 metres above sea level and is the more frequently visited peak.
Hikers use marked trails to reach viewpoints on Velký Blaník and Malý Blaník; the area is protected as part of a landscape area that preserves local forest, meadow and rock habitats. The site is popular for day walks and for visitors interested in Czech folklore and rural landscapes.
Historically the hills have been a symbol in Czech culture, repeatedly referenced in literature and national storytelling; the legend has helped sustain local conservation interest. The hills are located in the Central Bohemian countryside, within reach of regional towns and village trailheads.
- Cultural legend: The hill pair is the centrepiece of a local protected landscape and a long-standing Czech national legend about sleeping knights who will return in a time of need.
