Blagaj tekke

The Blagaj tekke is an Ottoman-era Dervish house and cultural monument located at the spring of the Buna river in the village of Blagaj, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The tekke dates to the 16th century and is built at the base of a high karst cliff beside the river source.

The site is known for the tekke building and terraces that sit directly over the river source, and for the clear spring where water issues from the cliff. Visitors commonly use the riverside terraces and short pathways to view the tekke and the spring; there are small cafes and seating areas adjacent to the tekke.

The tekke was established in the Ottoman period as a Sufi monastery associated with the Bektashi order and has remained a local cultural and religious landmark since the 16th century. Above the tekke the remains of medieval fortifications mark an older defensive position on the cliff.

Blagaj is a riverside village in southern Bosnia and Herzegovina, located beside the Buna spring and cliff, roughly in the vicinity of Mostar in the country’s Herzegovina region.

• Buna spring: A karst spring that issues directly from the base of a high limestone cliff to form the short Buna river; the spring is the immediate natural feature beside the tekke.
• Blagaj Fort (ruins): Ruined medieval fortifications and castle remains perched above the village on the cliff, visible from the riverside below and forming part of the local historic landscape.
