Blagaj Fortress

Blagaj Fortress is the ruined medieval stronghold overlooking the village of Blagaj and the Buna river spring in southern Bosnia and Herzegovina. The site consists of stone fortifications positioned on a steep rocky outcrop above the valley.

The hilltop ruins offer visible stretches of defensive walls and remains of internal structures, together with expansive views down to the riverside settlement and the karst spring of the Buna. Visitors typically combine a short hike up to the fortress with a visit to the riverside area and historic buildings below.

The fortress dates from the medieval period and was an important local fortification during Ottoman and earlier regional rule; over time it fell into ruin and is now preserved as an archaeological and historic site. The adjacent village developed around the river spring and features older religious and vernacular architecture.

Blagaj Fortress sits on a limestone cliff above the Buna river valley in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, a short distance from the town of Mostar and within the Herzegovina karst landscape.
