Blackpool Tower
Building Victorian seaside tower offering views and entertainment
Blackpool Tower anchors the town’s Victorian seafront with an observation deck, the Tower Ballroom and a long‑running circus; visitors come for seaside amusements, the illuminations and traditional British coastal fare.
Blackpool Tower is a steel observation and entertainment tower on the seafront at Blackpool in England, opened in 1894. It is a landmark of the town and combines public viewing galleries with performance spaces.
Visitors can use lifts to reach elevated viewing galleries that provide panoramic views along the promenade and out to the Irish Sea. At the tower base are long-established entertainment spaces, including an ornate ballroom and a circus ring that date from the tower’s original development.
Conceived in the late 19th century and opened in 1894, the tower was modelled on contemporary iron towers of the period and became a central element of Blackpool’s seaside resort development. Over time the complex has retained its entertainment uses while updating visitor facilities.
Standing on Blackpool’s Central Promenade in Lancashire, the tower is immediately adjacent to the seafront and central visitor infrastructure of the town.
- Opening date: Completed and opened in 1894, the structure was inspired by contemporary iron towers and remains a focal point on Blackpool's Central Promenade.
- What to expect: The tower includes performance and exhibition spaces at its base as well as elevated viewing areas, making it both an entertainment venue and an observation landmark.
What to See #
- Base complex (Ballroom and Circus): A multi-level tourist complex at the tower base housing the historic ballroom with ornate interior decoration and the long-running circus, both part of the original 19th-century attraction.
- Observation galleries (Tower Eye): The steel observation level and viewing galleries near the top of the structure that offer panoramic views along the seafront and across the Irish Sea; these are reached by lift within the tower.
How to Get to Blackpool Tower #
Take the train to Blackpool North (regular services from Preston and other Fylde Coast towns) or to Blackpool South on the South Fylde Line. From Blackpool North it’s roughly a 15-25 minute walk south along the town streets to the Promenade and Blackpool Tower; from Blackpool South it’s a slightly shorter walk north along the Promenade. There is also frequent local bus service around the seafront and town centre.
Tips for Visiting Blackpool Tower #
- Buy Tower Eye tickets online and arrive on a weekday morning or late afternoon to avoid the heavy summer-weekend queues on the Promenade.
- Enter from the Promenade main entrance and, if available, add the Blackpool Tower Ballroom or Circus events-many visitors only go up to the viewing platform and miss these historic interior attractions.
- Time your visit for clearer views: mornings and early evenings often have the best visibility across the Irish Sea and over the town, while mid-afternoon can be busiest.
