Main image

The Black Mountains are a hilly range in southeast Wales forming the easternmost part of the Brecon Beacons / Bannau Brycheiniog National Park. The range includes upland moor and steep escarpments with a highest point at Waun Fach (811 metres).

The area is used extensively for walking and ridge routes, with notable summits such as Waun Fach (811 m) and Hay Bluff (around 677 m). Long-distance trails cross the hills, including substantial sections of the Offa’s Dyke Path (about 177 miles / 285 km in total) and routes linking to the Beacons Way.

Many routes offer panoramic views across the Usk and Wye valleys and access to peatland and heather moorland; routes range from short ridge walks to multi-day treks. Popular access points and parking are found near villages such as Hay-on-Wye and Crickhowell, which serve as bases for multi-stage walks.

The uplands have long been used for pastoral farming, especially sheep grazing, and for common land grazing rights. Over centuries the landscape has been shaped by agricultural use, enclosure and periodic peat cutting, while paths and tracks established for droving now form the walking network.

The Black Mountains sit on the borderlands between Wales and England in southeast Wales, forming the eastern arm of the Brecon Beacons / Bannau Brycheiniog National Park. The range lies near market towns such as Hay-on-Wye and Abergavenny and is within driving distance of Cardiff and Hereford as regional centres.

  • Practical tip: Best walking conditions are generally late spring to early autumn; weather can change quickly at elevation so sturdy footwear and windproof layers are recommended.
  • Safety note: Several ridge walks include exposed sections and peat bogs - navigation skills and a map and compass are useful when visibility is poor.

What to See #

  • Waun Fach (highest peak): Highest point of the range at 811 metres above sea level, offering wide upland views and access routes for walkers on the east side of the Brecon Beacons/Bannau Brycheiniog area.
  • Hay Bluff: A prominent bluff on the western escarpment rising to about 677 metres, with steep slopes and popular viewpoints over the Usk Valley and Wye Valley.
  • Offa's Dyke Path: A long-distance route that runs along or close to the range; the trail is approximately 177 miles (285 km) in total and sections cross the Black Mountains ridges.
