Bisotun
Historical Site Epic rock reliefs and inscriptions from Achaemenid Persia.
Bisotun, in Iran’s Kermanshah province, preserves the Behistun Inscription and royal rock reliefs of Darius the Great. Visitors study multilingual inscriptions, monumental carving and associated archaeological remains on a steep escarpment.
Bisotun is an archaeological and epigraphic site on a limestone cliff in western Iran notable for a monumental Achaemenid royal inscription and relief. The most prominent feature is a large carved depiction of King Darius I with accompanying cuneiform texts that record his achievements.
The carved relief and trilingual inscription date to about 520 BCE and record royal proclamations of Darius I; the site also preserves later rock carvings, inscriptions and archaeological layers from Parthian and Sassanian periods. The relief is set on a cliff face that forms part of a broader archaeological complex with settlement and funerary remains.
The monument was commissioned by Darius I of the Achaemenid Empire in the late 6th or early 5th century BCE as a statement of royal authority. Over subsequent centuries the cliff and surrounding slopes acquired additional inscriptions and human activity, resulting in a multi-period archaeological record that documents continental communications and imperial propaganda.
Bisotun lies in Kermanshah province in western Iran, on a prominent escarpment that has long marked a main route through the Zagros foothills. The site is located near the modern city of Kermanshah and is reached by road from that regional centre.
- Viewing and access: The cliff relief is most clearly seen from a viewing area; reaching the carved panels requires a short uphill approach and some stair climbing.
