Birthplace of Jesus: Church of the Nativity and the Pilgrimage Route, Bethlehem

Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem is the church and grotto traditionally identified as the birthplace of Jesus, located in the centre of Bethlehem in the West Bank. The site has been an active place of Christian pilgrimage since antiquity and is protected as a heritage ensemble that includes the basilica and its approaches.

The complex contains a large basilica above ground and the subterranean Grotto of the Nativity marked by a 14-point silver star, reached by a steep stair. Manger Square outside the church is the principal gathering and procession point and is the focus of major liturgical celebrations. Multiple denominational altars and chapels are clustered around the grotto and nave, so visitors often see segmented access and separate liturgical areas.

The original church on the site was commissioned in the 4th century under Constantine and his mother Helena; the surviving above-ground basilica contains material from later reconstructions including major work in the Byzantine and medieval periods. Over centuries the site has been repaired and altered by successive Christian communities and has continuously hosted pilgrimage and liturgical use.

The church stands in central Bethlehem in the West Bank, a short distance south of Jerusalem - roughly 10 kilometres by road. The complex fronts onto Manger Square in the old town and sits within a dense urban fabric of narrow streets and religious buildings.
