Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge protects the Nisqually River estuary at the southern end of Puget Sound in Washington State and preserves tidal marshes, mudflats and associated freshwater wetlands. The refuge is a regional center for migratory birds and estuarine habitat protection.
Trails and an accessible boardwalk provide close observation of estuarine processes and birdlife, and a staffed visitor center offers exhibits and information on the delta’s ecology. The refuge is popular with birdwatchers, school groups and visitors interested in coastal ecosystems.
The refuge was established to protect the Nisqually Delta’s habitats and was later renamed to honor tribal leader and treaty rights advocate Billy Frank Jr. The site continues to be managed for habitat conservation, research and public education.
The refuge sits at the Nisqually River delta on southern Puget Sound, adjacent to the Nisqually River and saltwater channels, and is reached from the Olympia/Thurston County region.
