Bikin National Park
National Park Vast Russian taiga protecting Amur tiger habitat
Protecting old-growth Ussuri forests in the Russian Far East, Bikin National Park is notable for Amur tiger habitat, mixed broadleaf-conifer stands and indigenous Udege communities. Access typically requires permits and guided trips.
Bikin National Park protects the Bikin River basin and surrounding old-growth broadleaf and mixed forests in the Russian Far East. The park was created to conserve intact temperate forests that host significant populations of large mammals and rich biodiversity.
The area includes extensive tracts of Korean pine-broadleaf forest and river valleys that support species such as the Amur tiger, Far Eastern leopards in adjacent landscapes, and populations of endemic and culturally important species. The park is also the ancestral territory of indigenous Udege and related communities.
The park was established in the 21st century as part of Russia’s program to protect key forested landscapes and has also been recognised internationally for its natural values. Management focuses on habitat protection, controlled tourism and working with local communities.
Bikin National Park lies in the Russian Far East, in Primorsky Krai, along the Bikin River valley several hundred kilometres north of Vladivostok; access is by long roads or river travel and the area is remote.
- Conservation value: Established to protect extensive old-growth mixed forests that are core habitat for the Amur tiger and other rare Far East species.
- Access: Access is limited and regulated; travel into the park typically requires permits and local guides because of remoteness and to protect sensitive areas.
Tips for Visiting Bikin National Park #
- Bikin National Park sits in the Russian Far East and is remote; access is controlled and best done through approved operators or park authorities - contact the park in advance to arrange permits and guided excursions rather than attempting independent travel.
- Aim for late spring to early autumn for the most reliable river access and milder weather; many routes become difficult in winter or during spring thaw, and logistics (boats, guides) are far more limited off-season.
- Include time for cultural visits: organized trips often combine wildlife viewing with Udege village visits and guided nature interpretation-these community- or ranger-led experiences are what many independent visitors miss and they require planning ahead.
