Big Thicket National Preserve is a federally protected area in southeastern Texas established to conserve a complex of forests, wetlands and bayous known for high biological diversity. The preserve protects a mosaic of ecosystems where pine savanna, bottomland hardwoods, swamps and prairie meet.
Trails, boardwalks and waterways offer opportunities to see a wide range of plant communities and wildlife; popular activities include hiking, birdwatching and paddling through bayous. The preserve’s mosaic of habitats supports many rare and regionally uncommon species, making it a focus for ecological study and outdoor recreation.
The modern preserve was created in the 1970s to protect remaining blocks of original Big Thicket habitat from development and resource extraction, and management since then has emphasised restoration and public access. It comprises several non-contiguous units with different access points and facilities.
The preserve lies in southeastern Texas inland from the Gulf Coast, with access points near towns such as Beaumont and Kountze; it is located in a low-lying landscape of pinewoods, rivers and bayous.
- Multiple units: The preserve protects multiple, non-contiguous tracts of forest and wetland, so planning which unit to visit in advance is important to match activities such as hiking, paddling or wildlife watching.
- Practical tips: Trail conditions vary by season and some areas are best accessed by canoe or kayak; bring insect repellent in warmer months and check access with the preserve's visitor centers.
