Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area protects a rugged stretch of the Big South Fork of the Cumberland River and surrounding sandstone plateau, spanning parts of Tennessee and Kentucky. The area was established to conserve the river corridor, scenic rock formations and historic cultural sites while providing outdoor recreation.

Visitors encounter deep river gorges, extensive sandstone bluffs and natural arches that are popular for hiking, horseback riding and rock viewing, along with river corridors used for paddling and fishing. The area contains preserved historic coal-mining and railroad features that are interpreted at trailheads and visitor centers, offering both natural and cultural attractions for day use and multi-day trips.

The region includes a history of small-scale mining, logging and railroading from the late 19th and early 20th centuries; preserved industrial sites and rail grades are part of the area’s interpretive resources. Federal designation as a national river and recreation area provided protection for both the natural gorge landscapes and the historic remnants of regional industry.

The recreation area lies on the Cumberland Plateau along the Tennessee-Kentucky border, with primary access from communities in northern Tennessee and southern Kentucky and trailheads scattered across the protected lands. It is reachable by regional highways serving the plateau region.

  • Bilateral boundary and focus: The protected area straddles the Tennessee-Kentucky border and is managed for both river recreation and preservation of scenic sandstone gorges and natural arches.

Tips for Visiting Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area #

  • Plan your trip for spring or fall to avoid summer heat and biting insects; these seasons also offer better daylight for viewing sandstone bluffs and natural arches.
  • Allow driving time between trailheads-Big South Fork is a wide, road-access park and popular trailheads can be far apart; pick a district or two rather than trying to see everything in one day.
  • Make time for the park's natural arches and historic sites (for example, Twin Arches and the Blue Heron area); the historic coal-mining remnants are easily missed from the main overlooks but reward short hikes.
  • Cell reception is spotty across the area-grab a paper map or download routes beforehand and check seasonal road conditions if you plan to use unpaved access roads.
