Archaeological Site Ancient rock shelters with prehistoric cave paintings
Group of prehistoric rock shelters in central India containing Paleolithic and Mesolithic cave paintings. Visitors and archaeologists study animal and human scenes, rock art panels and surrounding deciduous woodland.
The Bhimbetka rock shelters are a complex of natural rock shelters in central India notable for prehistoric rock paintings and long-term human occupation. The site preserves rock art panels and archaeological deposits that document cultural activity from the Paleolithic through historic periods.
The painted panels show humans, animals, hunting scenes and symbolic motifs executed in multiple styles and pigments; the site encompasses many discrete shelters clustered along rocky outcrops. Interpretation emphasizes the shelters’ use as habitation, ritual and artistic spaces over thousands of years.
Archaeological work has revealed stratified deposits, stone tools and hearths demonstrating repeated occupation; the shelters have been studied since the 20th century and were recognized internationally for their outstanding prehistoric record. Excavations and conservation efforts have focused on documenting painting sequences and protecting fragile panels.
Geographically the shelters lie in the Belan River valley in Raisen district, Madhya Pradesh, about 45 km south of the state capital Bhopal. The terrain around the site is limestone and sandstone outcrops amid forested and agricultural land.
- UNESCO inscription: Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2003 for its long record of prehistoric human occupation and rock art.
