Betla National Park
National Park Biodiversity-rich national park with tigers and wildlife
Protected parkland in India known for forested safaris, jeep trails and village visits; travellers come for wildlife watching-deer and primates are commonly reported-along with rugged escarpments and seasonal birdlife.
Betla National Park is a protected area on the Chota Nagpur Plateau in eastern India, located in the Latehar/Palamau area of present-day Jharkhand. It forms part of the larger Palamau protected landscape and is noted for dry deciduous forest and wooded hill country.
The park is visited for wildlife viewing and safari-style drives; species present include large mammals such as gaur, deer species and carnivores including leopard and tiger, along with a range of birds. There are also rocky viewpoints and waterfalls nearby that attract nature visitors.
The area was set aside as a protected forest and later incorporated within regional tiger and wildlife conservation arrangements; settlements and historic structures such as Betla Fort lie close to park facilities. Management has focused on combining wildlife protection with regulated visitor access.
Geographically the park sits on the eastern edge of the Chota Nagpur Plateau, in the Latehar/Palamau region, with mixed forest and rocky hills rather than flat plains.
- Best time to visit: Best wildlife viewing for many species is during the dry season, roughly October to March, when animals concentrate around water sources.
- Visits and safaris: Park access commonly uses registered safari routes and park rest houses; visitors should check permits and guided-safari availability in advance.
What to See #
- Betla Fort: Historic Betla Fort with stone ruins near the park headquarters, historically associated with the town of Betla and used as a local administrative centre.
- Waterfalls and viewpoints: Lodh Falls and other local waterfalls that are used as tourist viewpoints and picnic areas in the southern part of the reserve.
