Bethsaida

Bethsaida is an archaeological and biblical site on the northeastern shore of the Sea of Galilee in Israel, identified in traditions as a fishing village mentioned in the New Testament.

Excavations have revealed settlement remains, evidence of fishing activity and public architecture from Hellenistic to Byzantine periods; visitors encounter ruins, excavation areas and interpretive displays. The site is of particular interest for its links to late ancient village life on the lake and for its biblical associations.

The site was occupied over many centuries and shows material culture from the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine eras; it is referenced in historical and religious texts as a centre for fishing and local trade. Archaeological investigation in the 20th and 21st centuries has aimed to clarify its chronology and its relationship to the biblical place-name.

Situated on the northeastern shore of the Sea of Galilee, Bethsaida lies within Israel’s Northern District and is accessible by road from regional towns and from routes around the lake.
