Beth Alpha synagogue National Park

The Beth Alpha synagogue is a Byzantine-period synagogue located at the Beit Alfa archaeological park in northern Israel, notable for its extensive and well-preserved mosaic floor. It is typically dated to the 6th century CE.

The principal attraction is the large mosaic pavement featuring a zodiac wheel and biblical scenes such as the Binding of Isaac, laid out in vivid tesserae. The synagogue’s stone walls outline a basilica-style plan, and the mosaics are displayed under a protective shelter with pathways for viewing.

Built in the Byzantine period as a congregational synagogue, the site was later abandoned and rediscovered by archaeologists in the 20th century; excavations uncovered the mosaic floor and architectural remains. Conservation efforts have focused on stabilizing and protecting the mosaics for public display.

The site lies in northern Israel at the Beit Alfa archaeological park, near the Jezreel Valley region and accessible from nearby towns and roads.

The Beth Alpha synagogue is in Beit Alpha National Park near Kibbutz Beit Alpha in northern Israel (the Beit She’an valley). By car take Route 71 (the Afula-Beit She’an road) and follow signs for Kibbutz Beit Alpha; there is parking at the national park. From the town of Beit She’an it is a short drive (around 10-15 minutes).

• Aim for early morning or late afternoon at Beit Alpha National Park for softer light on the mosaic and fewer tour groups; weekdays are generally quieter than Fridays and weekends.
