Beth Alpha synagogue

The Beth Alpha synagogue is a Byzantine-period synagogue located at the Beit Alfa archaeological park in northern Israel, notable for its extensive and well-preserved mosaic floor. It is typically dated to the 6th century CE.

The principal attraction is the large mosaic pavement featuring a zodiac wheel and biblical scenes such as the Binding of Isaac, laid out in vivid tesserae. The synagogue’s stone walls outline a basilica-style plan, and the mosaics are displayed under a protective shelter with pathways for viewing.

Built in the Byzantine period as a congregational synagogue, the site was later abandoned and rediscovered by archaeologists in the 20th century; excavations uncovered the mosaic floor and architectural remains.
