Betar (ancient city)

Betar is an ancient fortified settlement in the West Bank that served as a major Jewish stronghold in the late Second Temple period. It is best known as the final fortress to fall in the Bar Kokhba revolt against Rome.

Remains at the hilltop site include sections of city walls, rock-cut installations and building foundations; visible archaeology shows the defensive layout typical of a fortified town. Interpretive signs and trails guide visitors around the principal ruins and viewpoints over the surrounding landscape.

The settlement served as a regional fortress and was the site of the last organized resistance in the Bar Kokhba revolt; Roman forces captured and destroyed the fortress in 135 CE. Subsequent centuries saw the site abandoned and later explored by archaeologists who documented defensive works and material culture from the period.

The ruins occupy a strategic hilltop in the central Judean highlands / West Bank and are accessible from nearby towns and highways in the region.
