Berwick Castle
Castle Ruined medieval castle overlooking the River Tweed.
Berwick Castle overlooks the River Tweed at Berwick-upon-Tweed; visitors explore medieval ruins, riverfront walks and the town’s history on the Anglo-Scottish border.
Berwick Castle is a ruined medieval fortress at Berwick-upon-Tweed on the English side of the River Tweed. It was an important fortification on the Anglo-Scottish border during the medieval period.
The site consists of visible ruins and surviving sections of curtain wall and earthworks that illustrate medieval defensive design; it is commonly visited for short walks around the ramparts and to view the river and town from the elevated positions. Interpretation on site is limited, so visits are often combined with a walk through the historic town.
Constructed in the medieval period, the castle changed hands repeatedly during the wars between England and Scotland and was altered over centuries to meet evolving military needs. Over time the stronghold fell into ruin as newer fortifications and changing political conditions reduced its military role.
Positioned on the south bank of the River Tweed within Berwick-upon-Tweed, the castle lies at the northern edge of Northumberland close to the England-Scotland border and is integral to the town’s historic core.
- Access: The castle stands immediately adjacent to the centre of Berwick-upon-Tweed, making it easy to visit on foot from the town and the River Tweed bridges.
