Main image

Berlengas is a small archipelago and nature reserve off Portugal’s central coast, associated with the town of Peniche. The islands are known for rugged granite landscapes, seabird colonies, clear waters and historical fortifications.

The main attractions include the largest island, Berlenga Grande, which hosts walking paths, sea caves and a prominent 17th-century fortress built to defend the islands. The clear coastal waters and marine reserve make the archipelago popular for boat trips, birdwatching and diving.

The islands have been used historically for fishing and as a strategic defensive position, with the fort constructed in the 17th century to deter corsairs and naval attack. Over time the site has become protected for its natural and historical values.

The Berlengas lie off the coast near the fishing port town of Peniche on Portugal’s central-west coast, approximately a short boat crossing from the mainland. The surrounding marine environment is part of the island reserve.

  • Access by boat: Boat services run from Peniche and trips are weather dependent; services are the primary way visitors reach the islands and landing times are limited.
  • Visitor services: Limited facilities on the islands mean visitors should plan for minimal services and bring water, sun protection and appropriate footwear.

What to See #

  • Berlenga Grande: The largest island in the group, containing the 17th-century fortress built to guard the archipelago and the main visitor landing point and trails.
  • Fort of São João Baptista: A 17th-century coastal fortress constructed to defend the islands, prominently sited on the main island and accessible to visitors exploring the archipelago.
  • Natural reserve: A protected marine and terrestrial reserve supporting seabird colonies, coastal vegetation and sea caves important for wildlife and biodiversity.

How to Get to Berlengas #

Berlengas is an offshore archipelago reached only by boat from the coastal town of Peniche. Passenger ferries and tour boats depart Peniche harbour (Porto de Peniche) on a seasonal schedule; the boat ride to Berlenga Grande typically takes about 30-45 minutes and is weather dependent.

By car, Peniche is reached from Lisbon via the A8 motorway; the drive is roughly 80-100 km (about 1-1.5 hours depending on traffic). Once in Peniche, the boat departure point is at the town harbour, a short walk from central Peniche.

Tips for Visiting Berlengas #

  • Take one of the first morning ferries from Peniche (calmer seas and kinder light for photos) and book seats in advance on weekends or summer Saturdays when operators sell out.
  • Land on Berlenga Grande and head straight to the fortress (Fortaleza de São João Baptista) to avoid later crowds; many visitors linger on the main landing while the best viewpoints and walking trails are quieter earlier in the day.
  • If you want water activities, arrange snorkeling or small-boat cave trips through a licensed operator in Peniche rather than trying to improvise on arrival - operators know the permitted routes inside the nature reserve and the safest launch spots.
