The Berkshires are a highland region in western Massachusetts, United States, known for rolling hills, forested ridges and a concentration of cultural institutions. The area is part of the broader Appalachian Highlands and is a year-round destination for arts and outdoor activities.

The region is home to major cultural sites and museums as well as seasonal concert venues, attracting visitors for music festivals, galleries and theatre. Outdoor activities include hiking, skiing, cycling and lake recreation across state parks and conserved lands; the area’s highest point reaches 1,064 metres.

The Berkshires developed in the 19th and 20th centuries as a retreat and cultural hub, with estates, music venues and museums established around small towns. Today it combines rural landscapes with well-known arts institutions and recreational infrastructure.

The region occupies the extreme western portion of Massachusetts, with principal towns including Pittsfield, Lenox, North Adams and Great Barrington, and lies roughly west of the greater Boston area.

How to Get to Berkshires #

By car: About 2.5-3 hours west of Boston via the Mass Pike (I-90) to exits for Lee/Pittsfield or via I-91 and Route 7A for a more scenic approach. By rail: Amtrak serves Pittsfield seasonally and year-round service to nearby Springfield; rental car recommended to reach dispersed towns. By air: Albany International Airport is roughly 50-60 miles south; Bradley (Hartford) and Boston Logan are further but possible.

  • Arrive early for Tanglewood lawn seats-park at the Lenox Commons and take the shuttle to avoid the worst parking crush.
  • Drive the 7A corridor (Route 7A) at dawn for woodland light and empty vistas; stop in Stockbridge to see Norman Rockwell Museum's paintings before crowds build.
  • In fall, use back roads through Savoy and Cheshire rather than the Mass Pike to savor foliage and avoid Berkshire traffic.
  • Buy tickets for Jacob's Pillow and MASS MoCA in advance-weekend performances and special exhibitions sell out fast.
