How to Get to Berkovitsa#
Berkovitsa is reached primarily by road from Sofia (intercity bus or car). Rail travel requires transfers to bus or taxi from nearby mainline stations; buses are simpler for direct travel.
Sofia Airport (SOF): Sofia is the main international airport for reaching Berkovitsa. From Sofia you can travel by intercity bus to Berkovitsa (about 2-2.5 hours) or drive via the E79; buses depart from Sofia’s West Bus Station.
Other regional airports: Ruse and Plovdiv airports are much farther and usually impractical for visiting Berkovitsa.
Train: There is no direct fast train to Berkovitsa; the nearest mainline stations are at Montana and Vratsa, followed by local transport. Trains to those hubs are an option but usually require a bus or taxi onward.

- Train + Bus (via Montana/Vratsa) (Variable (combined fare)) - You can take a train from Sofia to Montana or Vratsa and then a local bus or taxi to Berkovitsa. This is usually slower and requires coordination of schedules, so it’s used less often than direct buses.
- Car / Taxi (BGN 80-200 (taxi from Sofia, approximate)) - Driving along the E79 route is direct and takes about 1.5-2 hours from Sofia depending on traffic. Taxis for long intercity trips can be costly-agree a price in advance.
