Bergisches Land

Bergisches Land is a hilly cultural and historic region in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, lying southeast of the Rhine and east of the Ruhr metropolitan area. The region is characterised by a mix of densely settled industrial towns and rural forested uplands, with a long history of small-scale industry and metalworking dating from the early industrial era.

Key features include steep river valleys such as the Wupper, numerous reservoirs and lakes, and towns with traditional half-timbered architecture. Industrial heritage sites, mountain railways and engineering landmarks sit alongside castles and rural hiking terrain, making the area a blend of cultural and natural attractions.

Geographically the Bergisches Land occupies the area east of Cologne and south of the Ruhr region within the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, centred on towns such as Wuppertal, Solingen and Remscheid.
