Bergenhus Fortress is a historic fortress complex at the entrance to Bergen harbour in western Norway, encompassing medieval and later military buildings. It is one of the best-preserved medieval fortifications in Norway and sits within the city of Bergen.

Principal visible buildings include Håkon’s Hall, a 13th-century royal hall used for ceremonies, and Rosenkrantz Tower, a fortified tower with major 16th-century modifications and later additions. The site also contains defensive walls, bastions, and administrative buildings used across centuries.

The complex served as a royal and military centre from the medieval period through the early modern era, hosting royal events, administrative functions, and defensive operations. Over time the fortress was modified to accommodate changing military technology and civic uses and is now used for museums, cultural events and state ceremonies.

Sited on the waterfront at the seaward end of Bergen’s harbour, the fortress lies within the urban core of Bergen in Vestland county, a short distance from the city’s historic Bryggen quay and other central landmarks.

  • Harbour location and access: The fortress is located at the mouth of Bergen harbour and is visible from central Bergen; it is open to the public with guided tours and occasional cultural events.
  • Key buildings and dates: Håkon's Hall dates to the 13th century and Rosenkrantz Tower contains major 16th-century and later modifications, representing different eras of Norway's medieval and early modern architecture.
