Bergenhus Fortress is a historic fortress complex at the entrance to Bergen harbour in western Norway, encompassing medieval and later military buildings. It is one of the best-preserved medieval fortifications in Norway and sits within the city of Bergen.
Principal visible buildings include Håkon’s Hall, a 13th-century royal hall used for ceremonies, and Rosenkrantz Tower, a fortified tower with major 16th-century modifications and later additions. The site also contains defensive walls, bastions, and administrative buildings used across centuries.
The complex served as a royal and military centre from the medieval period through the early modern era, hosting royal events, administrative functions, and defensive operations. Over time the fortress was modified to accommodate changing military technology and civic uses and is now used for museums, cultural events and state ceremonies.
