Berezan Island is a small island in the Black Sea at the western approach to the Dnieper-Bug estuary, within Mykolaiv Oblast, Ukraine. It has archaeological importance for early Greek and later coastal settlements.
The island is sparsely populated and visited primarily for its archaeological sites and natural environment rather than developed tourism services. Excavations have uncovered remains and artefacts indicating contacts with Greek colonists and regional trade in antiquity.
In antiquity the island was used as a seasonal base and trading point by Greek colonists from the northern Black Sea coast; archaeological work has documented funerary and settlement evidence dating to the Archaic and Classical periods. The island has seen changing control through medieval and modern periods and remains of historical interest.
Located near the mouth of the Dnieper-Bug estuary off Ukraine’s southern coast, Berezan Island lies within the coastal waters of Mykolaiv Oblast and is accessible by small boat from nearby mainland ports.
