The Beqaa Valley is a broad fertile valley in eastern Lebanon that forms the country’s principal agricultural plain. It lies between the Mount Lebanon range to the west and the Anti-Lebanon mountains to the east and supports extensive farming and viticulture.

Prominent features include large-scale cultivation of cereals, vegetables and vineyards; the valley contains modern towns and transport routes that link Lebanon to Syria. At the northern end of the valley sits the archaeological complex of Baalbek, noted for monumental Roman temple ruins.

Historically the Beqaa has been a strategic and productive corridor connecting interior Syria with the Mediterranean coast and has been cultivated since antiquity. In modern times it has retained its agricultural role and is a centre for Lebanese wine production.

The valley lies east of Lebanon’s central mountain spine in the Baalbek-Hermel and Beqaa Governorates, running roughly north-south and forming a prominent lowland corridor in the country’s interior.

  • Geographic setting: The valley sits between the Mount Lebanon range to the west and the Anti-Lebanon range to the east and is Lebanon's primary agricultural region.

What to See #

  • Baalbek ruins: Baalbek - located at the northern end of the valley and famous for large Roman temple ruins including massive stone foundations and columns.
  • Agricultural plains and vineyards: Agricultural plains and vineyard districts where cereals, vegetables and grapes are cultivated under irrigation on the valley floor.

How to Get to Beqaa Valley #

The Beqaa Valley lies east of Lebanon’s coastal range between Mount Lebanon and the Anti-Lebanon Hills. The valley is reached by road from Beirut via the main eastbound highway towards Zahle and Baalbek; once in the valley, the major towns (Zahle, Baalbek, Anjar) are connected by regional roads and local buses/taxis.

Tips for Visiting Beqaa Valley #

  • Plan visits in spring or autumn to avoid the intense summer heat; if you're heading to Baalbek, arrive early morning to explore the Roman ruins before temperatures and visitor numbers peak.
  • Combine archaeological visits (Baalbek) with the Beqaa's wineries-many wineries run morning or early-afternoon tours and tastings, so book ahead and arrange transport or a local driver for safe travel between sites.
  • Be aware that services can be sparse between towns-schedule fuel and cash needs in larger towns before venturing into agricultural or rural parts of the valley.
