Bennett Lake
Lake Glacial lake on Yukon-British Columbia border, Klondike route.
Bennett Lake straddles Yukon and British Columbia and figures in Klondike Gold Rush history; today visitors follow heritage trails, launch boats, and trace old mining settlements along forested shores.
Bennett Lake straddles the border between Yukon and British Columbia in northwestern Canada and is part of the river-lake corridor used during the Klondike Gold Rush. The lake sits at the southern end of the Chilkoot/White Pass route system and was a key transit and camping area for prospectors.
The lake is long and narrow, fringed by mountains and boreal forest, and is connected to other regional waterways that lead toward the Yukon interior. The lakeshore includes sites connected to late 19th-century gold-rush activity, including the former town of Bennett.
In the gold-rush era the lake was busy with steamers and transient settlements; rail and road developments later changed travel patterns and the historic settlements largely disappeared. Today the area is visited for its heritage sites, boating, and scenic routes.
Geographically it lies on the BC-Yukon boundary in northwestern Canada, south of Whitehorse and northeast of Skagway, Alaska, within a subarctic landscape.
- Gold Rush heritage: Played a central role during the Klondike Gold Rush as a staging point for prospectors arriving by coastal steamers; the former town of Bennett on the lake is now a historic site.
