Benin Moat
Archaeological Site Ancient earthwork defensive moats around Benin City
Massive precolonial earthworks around Benin City in Edo State, the Benin Moat marks former defensive systems; visitors combine site visits with local museums showcasing Benin art and history.
The Benin Moat is the network of earthen walls and moats that encircle historic Benin City in Edo State, Nigeria. It forms part of the larger Benin Walls complex and is among the most extensive man-made earthwork systems associated with a precolonial African state.
Surviving banks and ditches can be seen in and around the old city where they form raised embankments and linear depressions in the ground. Sections vary in height and width; some remain prominent in the urban landscape while others survive only as low ridges or place names.
Builders from the Edo people created and expanded the earthworks over many generations as defensive works and as markers of territory for the Kingdom of Benin. Portions of the system were damaged or removed following the British punitive expedition of 1897, which led to the looting and partial destruction of Benin City.
The earthworks are concentrated in and around Benin City, the capital of Edo State in southern Nigeria. Remnants lie within the modern urban area and in adjacent settlements and farmland.
- Viewing points: Surviving sections are best seen within and immediately around the old city of Benin City, where earth banks and ditches remain integrated into the modern urban fabric.
- Condition note: Many sections were altered or lost after the 1897 British punitive expedition, so preserved lengths vary in condition and visibility.
What to See #
- Benin City ramparts: Main surviving ramparts and moats lie around the historic core of Benin City, forming the most visible sections of the earthwork system today.
- Outlying embankments: Linear embankments and ditches extend beyond the urban core into surrounding settlements and farmland, marking the wider territory once controlled by the Kingdom of Benin.
