Bengtskär lighthouse
Tower Finnish lighthouse on rocky skerry; country's tallest
On a skerry in the Archipelago Sea, Bengtskär Lighthouse is Finland’s offshore lighthouse offering guided visits, overnight stays, seabird watching and views across rocky skerries.
Bengtskär lighthouse is a tall masonry lighthouse on a small skerry in the Gulf of Finland, off the southwestern Finnish coast. Built in the early 20th century, it is one of Finland’s best-known lighthouses and functions as a museum and visitor destination.
The main attraction is the lighthouse tower, which stands roughly 50+ metres tall and provides panoramic sea views from its upper levels; the tower interior houses exhibition rooms and guided routes. The skerry also hosts a small museum about the site’s maritime history and the 1941 wartime attack, and there are seasonal boat services that bring visitors from mainland ports during the summer.
Completed in 1906 to mark busy shipping routes in the Gulf of Finland, the lighthouse later saw action in 1941 when Soviet forces attacked it during the Continuation War; the episode and subsequent repairs are part of the site’s interpreted history. The structure has since been conserved and adapted for tourism, with overnight accommodation available on the skerry.
Perched on a granite skerry in the Gulf of Finland, Bengtskär lies off the southwest Finnish coast and is reached by boat from mainland harbours during the summer season.
- Height and date: Constructed in 1906, the tower is Finland's tallest lighthouse at about 52 metres and served both navigation and strategic roles in the 20th century.
- 1941 battle: A well-known 1941 Soviet attack on the lighthouse occurred during the Continuation War; the event is interpreted on-site and forms a common focus of visits.
