Ben Loyal
Mountain Distinctive Scottish peak popular with climbers
A sharply profiled mountain in Sutherland with rocky summits and ridges; attracts hillwalkers and photographers for its dramatic silhouette and views toward coastlines and moorland.
Ben Loyal is an isolated mountain massif in north Sutherland, Scotland, rising to 764 metres. It is notable for its steep quartzite ridges and blocky, sculpted summits.
The hill consists of several distinct tops with steep faces and short scrambling sections on places; the most prominent rocky crest is popular with hillwalkers and photographers for its compact, pyramidal appearance. From the tops there are wide views to the Kyle of Tongue, the north coast and neighbouring peaks.
Geologically the massif is formed from resistant rocks that give the mountain its steep, rugged outline; the area has been used for grazing and hillwalking rather than settlement. The isolated shape has made it a local landmark for centuries.
Ben Loyal sits near the village of Tongue on the north coast of Sutherland in the far north of mainland Scotland, forming an isolated skyline feature above the surrounding moorland and sea.
- Main summit: The massif reaches its highest point at 764 metres, giving it steep, craggy profiles that are visible for many miles on the north coast of Sutherland.
